An algebraic expression is a math phrase that contains ordinary numbers, variables, and operators. You are familiar with numbers, variables and operators. When we simplify an algebraic expression, an equivalent expression is formed which is simpler and smaller than the previous one.
There is no standard method for simplifying expressions as there is much different type of expressions. Mainly we group them in three categories:
1. Expressions that can be simplified immediately without any preparation.
2. Expressions that need some preparation before being solved.
3. Expressions that can't be solved completely.
Let’s take an example to see how to simplify expressions,
2x + 2y – 1 + 4x + 6y + 7 we can simplify expression by determining like terms and then grouping them and combining the like terms.
Step 1. 2x and 4x are the similar terms or like terms and we can add them, it will give 6x. Step 2. 2y and 6y are again like terms, we can combine them and it will give 8y. Step 3. -1 and +7 combine them to form 6. so, the expression is reduced as: 5x + 8y +6. This is one type of expression. To learn more about expressions, take help of online math tutors.
